12. The Coens And Nicolas Cage Clashed Over Their Filmmaking Styles

Due to their highly stylised and specific dialogue, the Coens aren't ones for improvisation on set. Nicolas Cage is one of the most famous method actors in history. This undoubtedly led to some issues on set for the collaborators.

Cage would often make suggestions to the directors that they ignored, with Cage noting that "Joel and Ethan have a very strong vision and I've learned how difficult it is to accept another artist's vision. They have an autocratic nature." A lot of his on set improvisations were left on the cutting room floor, and the Coens recognised that their styles undeniably clashed when working together.

The Coens also noted, however, that Cage's energy made him an ideal acting partner, as his "fertile imagination" meant he didn't need much encouragement to give his all to a character, unlike more timid actors who needed to be "kick started."

The Coens and Cage never worked with each other again despite their films being famous for frequent acting collaborators.
