5 Directors Who Could Save The X-Men Franchise From Mediocrity

Yes, Whedon's experience writing-directing Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, drove him into a virtual, self-inflicted Hollywood hermitude, but he's still expressed a desire to come back to the genre.

There's really no guarantee that he would agree to take the reins of another Marvel-based blockbuster, but the fact that Fox would probably grant him near-unlimited creative control over the project could be enough to pique his interest.

That way, he could make his movie in his own style – far removed from the pressures of corporate synergy and conformity that Marvel Studios has flustered some of its directors with.

Plus, as the scribe for the rebooted Astonishing X-Men series in 2004, he has a working knowledge of the X-Men's comic book history. That kind of experience can only help, not hurt.
