5 Reasons Why Cinema Is Dying And Needs To Evolve (And 2 Ways It Could Do That Instantly)
2. Streaming Service Owned Theatres
The idea of a streaming service owning a chain of their own cinemas is not just a pipe dream, it's a reality. Because in fact, Netflix has started to do just this, they have taken over the lease of the old Paris Theatre Cinema in New York. Which would have gone out of business (and kind of did if we’re honest) had the streaming giant not stepped in.
Now, Netflix buying one single-screened cinema is not parting the sea by any means, and they haven’t yet started building cinemas all over the place. However, it is a bold move. Not least because they have now officially entered the realm of the cinema, so you as the audience can watch anything that Netflix’s film production company comes out with on the big screen.
There are scarce details on pricing and such, but an ideal situation for most everybody people with a subscription would be a good discount on the price of their tickets. For those with no subscription, obviously, they simply pay a standard fare.
It should also be noted that Netflix buying cinemas was only allowed because of the US Department of Justice (DoJ) deciding to dismantle the 1948 Paramount Decree, which prohibited studios controlling the distribution of their own films in the US.
Of course, in the long run, there could be issues with trying to monopolise the market, which no doubt somebody will try and do. However, until then it does work as a solution to get people back into the theatres.
