5 Ways The Harry Potter Franchise Could Be Expanded Even Further

1. Further Film Series

Alternatively, if television still isn't considered 'big' enough for such a mammoth franchise, attempting to dominate the film landscape further is perfectly viable given the main series' $8 billion box office haul. Many were skeptical about the announcement of five Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them films before the first had even been released, but it has added a further $800 million to that total.

Indeed, Rowling's Wizarding World is the second highest grossing film series of all time, behind only the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe and ahead of Star Wars, James Bond and the combined Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit films. By taking a leaf out of Marvel's book and having several cinematic properties on the go simultaneously, the franchise could start chipping away at the comic giant's ever-growing lead.

Such a move would require the creation of more original stories, as unlike Marvel, there isn't 78 years worth of material to take inspiration from. Fantastic Beasts was written from scratch, having taken very little from the Comic Relief companion novel that first bared the title, so it's certainly not out of the realms of possibility that more new narratives could follow. Such a move would likely require Rowling giving up a degree of creative control, however, which could be a sticking point, as could the fact that the shared cinematic universe concept doesn't seem to be working out too well for other companies at this point in time.

Would fans eventually get burned out? It's hard to say and the answer will probably become more apparent after the next Fantastic Beasts release. Warner Bros are probably willing to offer a blank cheque at this point mind, given the returns on their investment thus far.
