A character's death in a movie doesn't have to be seen by an audience to be traumatic. Of course, there are plenty on this list that earned their place by being difficult to watch, but sometimes less is more.

This was the case with the Coen Brothers' remake of True Grit in 2010. Not only is this one of the best cinematic remakes ever, it is one of the very few that can boast that it's better than the original.

After being thrown together on a journey of revenge and justice, Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross (Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld) formed a bond. She ultimately looked to him as something of a father figure, as he protected her and saved her life, though their paths eventually took them far apart from each other.

25 years after they met, the two planned to see each other again, as Rooster invited Mattie to see the travelling show he was now a part of. This would have been the first time they were together in over two decades, but Rooster unfortunately passed just three days before Mattie came to him. Over half of her lifetime apart, only to be three days away from reuniting.
