7 Best Henry Cavill Roles To Date

6. Theseus - Immortals

Henry Cavill Immortals
Universal Pictures

Immortals stands as a financially successful, yet not critically loved, chapter in Cavill's career. Director Tarsem Singh evisiaged this film as doing for Greek mythology what Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet did for Shakespeare.

His lofty hope was met with very mixed reviews. While Cavill personifies the 'Caravaggio meets Fight Club' image that Singh was going for, the rest of the film doesn't quite meet that. Critic Roger Ebert gave the film a somewhat warm criticism, calling the film one of the 'best looking awful films of the year.'

There is no question: Immortals looks beautiful, combining 3-D, CGI and set piece imagery to deliver a film that, not unlike Zack Snyder's 300, would be instantly recognisable.

This seems to have, in part, been an aspect of the film's downfall - too much time was spent on the look of the film, with not enough being spent on the storytelling side. We see Cavill's Theseus carve his way through the action set pieces, though the film never quite manages to engage the viewer on an emotional level.

Cavill himself admitted in an interview that, on receiving the script, it had a few kinks in it. It was Singh's enthusiasm for the film that swung Cavill around, combined with his own boyhood fantasy of being a sword wielding hero. While this was not the brightest star on Cavill's acting CV, it was an early step in a positive direction.
