7 Horror Sci-Fi Films To Watch Before Alien Covenant

5. The Fly

Alien Covenant
20th Century Fox

A quintessential horror classic, The Fly is a must-watch for all fans of both science fiction and horror. Directed by body-horror master David Cronenberg, the film explores what happens when Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist, unintentionally fuses his DNA with that of a fly.

The practical effects here are truly astounding, and are still amongst the best ever put to film, making Seth's gruesome transformation into the 'Brundlefly' simultaneously awe-inspiring and vomit-inducing.

The 'Prometheus' narrative presented in The Fly isn't exactly anything new, remaining a consistent theme of science-fiction, but the film's exploration of man's hubris and desire to play God feels much more personal here than in traditional genre fare. Watching Seth painfully deteriorate over the course of the movie is not only horrifying but tragic too; serving as a more effectively terrifying deterrent of genetic-meddling than most similarly-themed stories.
