9 Positive Realisations From Re-Watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi

1. Luke's Death Is More Special Than You Remembered

On first viewing of The Last Jedi, if you're like most viewers, you get so caught up in everything that is thrown at you - and quite understandably so in such a challenging and complex movie - that it feels like Luke Skywalker just drops dead. It feels beyond disappointing and you can't help but feel, "Wait! It can't be over for Luke already!"

However, watching more objectively, his death is in actual fact a powerful, well-produced two-minute sequence. First, he shows his exhaustion. He climbs back up onto the rock, and it clearly it isn't easy for him. Next, he sees the twin sunset and stares at it for some long beats with tears growing in his eyes. The music matches all of this perfectly. Mark Hamill's performance is fantastic.

Again, on first viewing your mind is busily racing, "What's wrong with him? What's up here? He won't die surely?' But, when knowing that this will indeed happen, you can appreciate the moment. It's pretty long, it's very significant, and it has such emotional weight. His death is far more fully explored than Obi-Wan's back in 1977, that's for sure.

What's more, for those that did sit there disbelieving that this could be the end of Luke Skywalker's journey after such a brief role in The Force Awakens, well, remember that Rey explains that like Obi-Wan, Luke died in the way that he needed to, not in defeat. Over, his journey surely is not.
