9 Worst Performances In Acclaimed 2018 Movies
4. Meryl Streep - Mary Poppins Returns
There's a running joke that one day Meryl Streep might get an Oscar nomination for reading the phone book, but as much as the Academy loves the 21-time Oscar nominee, she sure won't be getting a nod for her trainwreck of a performance in Mary Poppins Returns.
Streep appears in cameo form in a single shoehorned sequence as Mary Poppins' (Emily Blunt) eccentric Eastern-European cousin Topsy.
The scene sees the actress kitted out in eye-rollingly stereotypical make-up and garb, while touting a head-smackingly hammy Slavic accent that'd make even Gary Oldman cringe.
Streep's song "Turning Turtle" is passable enough, but both her performance and the scene as a whole are completely out-of-place, feeling like cutting room floor material nobody had the heart to actually cut.
It's a shockingly low-effort feat of acting from the three-time Oscar winner and probably the most embarrassing thing she's ever been involved with.
