Avengers: Endgame is just around the corner, bringing with it the culmination of the entire MCU thus far, but the universe will go on. There's been a lot of talk as to what will come next, and the movie's writers have given a hint as to what that might entail, saying they want to write a Secret Wars movie for the Russo Bros.

Speaking with Screen Rant, writers Christopher Markus and Steven McFeely were asked about Secret Wars, which the Russos have expressed interest in, and if they'd want to write it for them. Markus said: "I have to read ‘Secret Wars’ again. It’s literally been ten thousand years," with McFeely adding, "If Joe and Anthony do another Marvel movie and they don’t have us write it, I will be personally offended."

The Russos said last year that Secret Wars is a story they'd be interested in adapting for the MCU, and they recently re-affirmed that desire with MTV News, saying:

"I keep saying Secret Wars ’cause that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid…this notion of event storytelling. That’s part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films is that the notion that you can contain so many different characters, and so many different points of view, and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us.”

The original Secret Wars was a 12-issue storyline that was published from 1984-85, and brought together a number of major heroes from across the Marvel Universe. It introduced a cosmic entity called the Beyonder, who transported the likes of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and more to a planet called Battleworld.

The story was then rebooted in 2015 by Jonathan Hickman, who also wrote the Infinity storyline that Infinity War drew upon. That version saw the destruction of the multiverse, meaning alternate-dimension characters had to be brought together. It's likely the Russos would take a bit of both versions, and add in a LOT of new stuff (as they have will all 'adaptations'), but the multiverse idea could be a great way of introducing the Fantastic Four and X-Men while explaining their absence thus far.
