Batman: 80 Greatest Ever Moments

7. The Alliance - The Long Halloween

DC Comics/Tim Sale

After Crisis on Infinite Earths remapped the entire DC universe, new writers were given the opportunity to retell Batman's formative years. Miller had Year One, but Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale were given free reign to tell the Dark Knight's early days in three books - The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Haunted Knight.

Of the three, it is The Long Halloween which is by far the most revered. The mystery is gripping, the art suitably atmospheric, and the relationships completely compelling. That trifecta between the Caped Crusader, Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent serves as the emotional core of the story, making the inevitable moment it shatters so much more impactful.

No wonder it's served as the definitive origin of Two-Face ever since.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
