Batman Vs. Superman: 3 Reasons We Needed A Wonder Woman Movie Instead

1. The Money Factor

Let's be honest for a moment here, people: Batman v. Superman is a total and utter cash grab. It may be nice to think Warner Bros. sincerely wanted to do this movie just to honor their characters, but that really isn't the case. They saw the box office receipts for The Avengers (not to mention their own Dark Knight trilogy numbers) and put two and two together to make many, many millions. It makes sense to put your two biggest icons in one movie, of course, but is it actually profitable? That may seem like a stupid question, but hear me out. Man Of Steel grossed $662,845,518 worldwide. This was considered to be something of a failure by Warner Bros., so one can conclude that they are counting on Batman to be main attraction here. However, Spider-Man 3 made $890,871,626 worldwide, whilst The Amazing Spider-Man pulled in only $752,216,557 worldwide. What does that have to do with the DC duo? Well, The Amazing Spider-Man was a reboot that came 5 years after Spider-Man 3 - numbers suggest people weren't quite ready to see a new version of their favourite web-slinger. Even though Batman Vs. Superman isn't a full blown reboot, then, it still faces the short duration (3 years) between Nolan's last Batman film and the fact that Nolan practically made cinematic Batman cool again. A huge gross isn't necessarily a guarantee with Batman Vs. Superman, because there's a high chance that people won't be ready to get invested in these characters so soon after the last time. Problems like this might've been avoided had Warner Bros. opted for a Wonder Woman movie instead. The new character would've avoid the issues previously mentioned and would have been a sure success by the studio's standards. A woman protagonist always has a slightly stronger appeal, and Wonder Woman being the icon that she so clearly is would've definitely aided its success. Even after the movie's initial release, I'm sure Wonder Woman toys would sell like wildfire for young girls who prefer a shield to go with that tiara. Anyway, there you have it folks. I am eager to see how director Zack Snyder handles this behemoth of a project and want to see the big bad(s) the duo will face. But I do wish a Wonder Woman could find a way to grace our screens in 2015 as well. Let me hear your thoughts in the comments section below. Like this article?
