15. Captain America's Foreshadowing Books
In an establishing shot inside Cap's apartment, we get a lingering introduction on his bookshelf - a surefire indication there's something of note there - and very observant audience members may be able to pick out titles, even with the hindrance of the beer google-like 3D glasses on their face. The title that stands out the most is "Never Surrender" to the left of the bookcase - which could well be a reference to Winston Churchill's bulldog spirit, and the whole war thing - but the real depth of the Easter Egg is a lot more complex than that. "Never Surrender" is the title of the autobiography of former head of US Special Forces, William "Jerry" Boykin, a big player in American Intelligence, including a high level role at the CIA. He was also a controversial figure, deeply embroiled in the War On Terror, and notoriously responsible for the motif: "What are you prepared to give up for America? Are you willing to pay the ultimate price?" Boykin was the poster-boy for underhand anti-terrorist methods, which were generally based on the Phoenix Programme used in Vietnam, that used apparently questionable tactics to destabilise the infrastructure of terrorist targets. Which is basically exactly what the big bad in Winter Soldier is up to...
Where To Watch Out For It After the brilliant car chase/battle sequence that sees Nick Fury escape the Winter Soldier's grasp at the last minute thanks to an incredible device that cuts through anything and allows gigantic, heavily injured men to escape through tiny gaps.
