Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs
5. The Creative Action Sequences
Right alongside the fun cast, the action sequences in this film make it considerably easier to forgive the rather by-the-numbers script.
There's a diversity to the various set-pieces throughout which, by borrowing so lovingly from the world of D&D, feel distinct from typical fantasy blockbuster action sequences.
Especially inspired is the extensive use of a Hither-thither staff - basically the Portal Gun from the Portal video games - to give the heroes a leg-up on their quest to rescue Edgin's daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman) from Forge.
Beyond that, there's a fantastically imaginative set-piece showing off Doric's shapeshifting abilities, a mad-dash through a maze, and several neat sequences involving dragons.
It's tough to imagine many walking away from this movie feeling under-served by the action, which helps hugely compensate for the garden variety storytelling.
