Disney must’ve been in all-out progressive mode when they came up with the idea for Moana. Not only is its star a Disney princess whose end goal isn’t snagging the prince charming of her dreams, she also just happens to be Polynesian too – the first Polynesian protagonist to be inaugurated into the Disney princess canon.
Newcomer Auli'i Cravalho gives a great performance in her voice acting debut as the eponymous Moana, the daughter of an island chief tasked with the mission of returning an ancient relic to its rightful goddess owner to save her island home, with support from Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson voicing the part of arrogant demigod Maui. If current Academy Award predictions come true, Moana could find itself in direct competition for the title of Best Animated Feature with Zootopia – a win-win for Disney either way.
