Every Coen Brothers Movie Ranked Worst To Best

7. Miller's Crossing (1990)

Inside Llewyn Davis
20th Century Fox

Miller's Crossing, even with the numerous films they've made since its release, still stands as one of the Coen Brothers' most iconic movies. A subtle and deeply intelligent noir gangster film, it focuses on the rivalry between two gangs and a man called Tom Reagan (a brilliant Gabriel Byrne) who works to play both sides of the escalating feud.

Also starring Albert Finney, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi and Marcia Gay Harden, Miller's Crossing was only the pair's third film, but already shows filmmakers at the height of their powers, born to make movies and just get better and more accomplished with each new film.

With Miller's Crossing, their use of scenery, sound, character and dialogue is completely spotless, the plot twisting like a snake around the key players in the story until it finally comes to a stunning and well-crafted conclusion. It watches like a 40s crime drama made by directors way ahead of their time, and works perfectly because of it.
