Death on the Nile confirms that Kenneth Branagh's series of Poirot movies are quite content to be staunchly average, unambitious retellings of Agatha Christie's iconic stories, and that's more-or-less fine?

Death on the Nile isn't great, but it delivers the basic, frothy goods with acceptable production values and a crackerjack cast, lest you can deal with Armie Hammer's presence and Gal Gadot giving that cursed line reading.

Branagh gets you in and out of the story in barely two hours while maintaining a breezy pace throughout, and even finding time to give Poirot's mustache its own hilarious origin story.

And despite it tanking at the box office, Disney felt confident enough in the property moving forward to greenlight a sequel, A Haunting in Venice, which is currently deep into production for a September release.
