If Yondu counts for Peter Quill, then Quill and his buddies surely count for young Groot. The first Groot we see is a grown adult, an equal partner with Rocket and a charmingly sweet character. However, when he dies in the first movie, he leaves (leaves, get it?) behind a son, also named Groot.

The first movie ends with him essentially as a baby, dancing a merry jig while still in his plant pot. The second Guardians movie takes place immediately after the first; a rarity in the MCU. This means we see him at his youngest across this movie too.

Rocket initially is the one taking care of him, though as such a close knit unit they all pitch in. Guardians 2 sees the gang separated for much of movie, but by the time Infinity War rolls around, Groot is now a moody teenager, and it’s very clear the whole ship view him as a son.

They all tell him off for his bad language, showing that they’ve each taken the effort to learn Groot speak too. When he’s dusted in Rocket’s arms, you can feel the depth of pain the raccoon is in.
