Golden Globes 2020: 10 Ups & 6 Downs
7. 1917 Shakes Up The Oscar Race
Until now, it seemed like the Oscar race was a three-way dance between The Irishman, Marriage Story, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Parasite picking up some fringe momentum at best (though undeniably handicapped by being in a foreign language).
And while the Globes is hardly a reliable predictor of the Oscars, the show did nevertheless make a passionate case for Sam Mendes' war epic 1917, which scooped Best Director and Best Picture (Drama), arguably the two most prestigious awards of the night.
Though 1917 is still days away from releasing wide in both the US and UK, its victory here also came days before the Oscar nominees will be announced, and just a few weeks ahead of the voting deadline for the big show itself.
With a lot of suspected industry pushback against Netflix films and Tarantino's latest proving slightly divisive with more mainstream audiences, it's possible a stylish crowd-pleaser like 1917 could sneak in and win the Best Picture Oscar next month. But as ever, wait and see.
If nothing else, the race just got a little more interesting.
