Golden Globes 2020: 10 Ups & 6 Downs
5. Laura Dern Beats J-Lo For Best Supporting Actress
The HFPA has a well-noted habit of rewarding movie stars rather than the most talented actor in any given category, and so, the bookies were convinced that Jennifer Lopez would win the Best Supporting Actress (Film) award for her performance in Hustlers.
But as great as Lopez was, she was outgunned in every sense by Laura Dern, who gave an arguably career-best performance as savage divorce lawyer Nora Fanshaw in Marriage Story.
Mercifully logic prevailed, and Dern won the award, before taking to the stage to give a short-but-sweet speech where she joked about finally being able to "do justice" to the long-suffering character of the divorce lawyer.
Though this is Dern's fifth Golden Globe win, and there's an argument to be made for "spreading the wealth," she was so far above anyone else in this category that she was really the only right choice.
And she's now damn-near guaranteed to win her first ever Oscar next month, too.
