4. Parasite Wins Best Foreign Language Film

In both the Golden Globes and the Oscars, the Best Foreign Language Film award is absurdly difficult to predict.

It often feels like the awards bodies simply pick the winner out of a hat, because the most-acclaimed and beloved foreign language films of the year have frequently come up short on awards night.

Thankfully that wasn't the case this year with Bong Joon-ho's mesmerising Parasite, which beat out the acclaimed likes of The Farewell, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Pain and Glory to win the gong.

With the help of a translator, Joon-ho brilliantly reminded the audience, "Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films."

Given that Parasite was also nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay, it seems the HFPA was especially gaga for it, and despite the oft-schizophrenic winners in this category, the right film certainly won.

Whether Parasite can pick up enough steam to break into major Oscar categories remains to be seen, but stranger things have most certainly happened.
