Golden Globes 2020: 10 Ups & 6 Downs
3. Joaquin Phoenix Beats Adam Driver For Best Actor
Going into the Globes, Adam Driver was the hot favourite for the Best Film Actor (Drama) award, so jaws were collectively dropped when the HFPA opted for Joaquin Phoenix instead, for his admittedly riveting work as Arthur Fleck in Joker.
Though Phoenix was absolutely worthy of the nomination, it's tough to argue with the brilliance of Driver's performance, who pretty much seemed like a lock for both the Golden Globe and the inevitable Oscar.
This has certainly shaken things up moving towards the Academy Awards, and in the very least, we got an hilarious, rambling speech from Phoenix out of it.
The actor famously hates the awards circus and took the opportunity to criticise hypocritical celebrities who champion climate change while flying on private jets.
It's not so much that Phoenix's performance wasn't awards-worthy, but in a year this strong, he wasn't quite #1.
