1. The Watchers Walk Away
The Scene: This final scene is a continuation of a quick moment that occurred halfway through the movie itself.
As Rocket and Yondu are jumping through wormholes and crossing a variety of alien worlds, the camera lingers on the man himself, Stan Lee, speaking to a group of aliens known as Watchers, regaling them with tales of his many exploits.
Flash-forward to this final post-credits tag, and we once again return to Stan and the group of Watchers - but it looks like they've heard enough.
They walk off and leave Lee by himself, apparently having grown tired of hearing about his many, many cameos.
What You Should Take Away From It: Did Marvel just confirm a long-standing fan theory that Stan Lee is playing a Watcher - an alien whose job it is to observe important events throughout the universe, but never intervene - meaning that he portrays the same character in every single MCU cameo?
Well, yes and no.
The film's credits list Lee as "The Watcher's Informant", meaning his character is not actually a Watcher, but rather, an ally to them.
But that doesn't mean he isn't playing the same character in every cameo. When asked by Screen Rant about the Watcher fan-theory, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had this to say:
“Yes, we always thought it would be fun. Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun... it wasn’t in for a long time and we put it back in towards the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent – we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he’s this same character who’s popped up in all these films.”
While Feige doesn't outright confirm, with a firm yes, that Lee is indeed playing the same character in every MCU movie, it seems like that's the case.
So keep your eyes peeled in Spider-Man: Homecoming. With the knowledge that Stan Lee is affiliated with the Watchers, you'll view his future cameos in a completely different light.
