Joss Whedon did a great job with Loki and Ultron in his Avengers movies, so it's legitimately surprising that not only was Steppenwolf forgettable, but also downright terrible. Cartoonish in appearance with the most generic plan possible, it was legitimately depressing to see these iconic heroes assemble to take on such an underwhelming big bad.

It remains to be seen how much he will have changed by the time Zack Snyder's Justice League is released on HBO Max, but the filmmaker has confirmed that his cut will include the villain's original design.

That was first glimpsed in the "Ultimate Edition" of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and concept art which has since been released online has depicted Steppenwolf as a massive, monstrous baddie. Ciran Hinds will presumably return to voice him, but this change in appearance is bound to be beneficial, particularly if it makes him a more believable threat to this League of heroes.
