MCU's X-Men Sounds A LOT Like This (& That's A Good Thing)

MCU X-Men - Whatever The Interpretation, It's Long Overdue

Regardless of whatever shape or form Jake Schreier's X-Men movie takes, though, it's a moment that's been a long time coming. Mutants have been teased and winked at in numerous MCU projects up to now, with the vast majority being brought back over from the Fox incarnation Disney shuttered post-2019 acquisition. It's only really with Sadie Sink's Jean Grey that they're being brought into the spotlight properly, and while question marks will inevitably remain over the decision to skew younger with the X-Men's more iconic characters, it's ultimately a move that has both precedent and merit behind it.

So, whether it skews more towards X-Men: Evolution or puts a more youthful spin on the comics of Claremont and Byrne, whether it takes a big swing like House of X or leaves us Wolverine-less for a while, there's essentially endless scope for this reboot to improve on what came before. Schreier is making all the right noises, the castings are anything if not exciting, and with a clean, post-Secret Wars slate to work with, it really feels like the X-Men are getting back to where they belong.

Just don't leave me hanging too long for that Nightcrawler casting news, yeah? Just make sure he has his swords. (My boy needs to swashbuckle.)

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
