Masters Of The Universe Reboot Takes A Step Forward With The Help Of Thor

Long-gestating movie finds a new writer.

We've been hearing about a Masters Of The Universe reboot for a long time. Numerous names including Terry Rossio (Pirates Of The Caribbean), Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) and Evan Daugherty (Snow White & The Huntsman) have taken pops at a screenplay, but nothing's come to pass. Things are starting to look a bit desperate for He-Man and Skeletor, and when the going gets tough, you gotta roll out the big-guns. Enter Thor: The Dark World screenwriter Christopher Yost, now the latest man to try and bring Eternia to life. Yost has been hired to pen a draft by Columbia, which proves if nothing else, that the studio still wants to try and make the dang thing. If you're a child of the '80s there's a good chance you remember Masters Of The Universe as a line of fantasy action figures or shonky Saturday morning cartoons. There was even a prior film starring the all-time great pair-up of Courtney Cox and Dolph Lundgren. These days it's more of a punch-line than anything else, but that hasn't prevented Hollywood trying to morph the cornball concept into a major blockbuster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF20B8p4F08 It's no surprise that Columbia are turning to a Marvel writer for help, as that brand pretty much rules the cinematic roost. It's also unsurprising they've tapped somebody who worked on Thor to aid them, given that the God of Thunder is probably the most unfashionable character in that canon. Thor's heritage, bulging physique and fantastic home-world always earmarked him as a tonal question mark, but it's one Marvel subverted cleverly. By building the character around a combination of Shakespearean tragedy (his questionable family) and fish-out-of-water comedy, the character has adapted well to a more contemporary tone. Yost's probably been similarly tasked with the campy Masters Of The Universe property. Is there any potential in a Masters Of The Universe flick? Or is it time to let the pipe-dream of a 21st century iteration fade? Let us know in the comments below.
