My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs
1. Up: A Clear Emotional Throughline
World Heroes Mission was a surprise in many ways. Though it wasn't as put-together and clean as its predecessor, Two Heroes, its simplicity gave such clarity to its emotional beats. It wasn't burdened, so much as it was building on its five seasons and two films of history.
The actual mission wasn't even really the focus for a large part of the film, and neither were the many established main cast of the series. However, their presence didn't feel contrived, instead making their roles feel to scale to the established stakes. The opening scene sets up the threat effectively without needing to explain the world they lived in, allowing audiences to delve headfirst into the fray and trusting them to understand the stakes.
What brings it all together is how the film never seems to stumble when it comes to its emotional core, represented by the dynamic between the cynical yet secretly soft Rody and the earnestly heroic Deku.
In classic My Hero Academia fashion, it presents hopeful answers to grim realities without being overly hokey, sentimental without it feeling forced.
Despite its flaws, it's a unique and strong entry to the My Hero mythos.
