One Mind Blowing Secret From Every MCU Movie
24. The Car Crash Stunt - Doctor Strange
In a similar vein to Ant-Man, Doctor Strange is a film not only built for CGI, but one that is absolutely elevated by some of the best work in that particular department the MCU had seen at the time, and the likes of which haven't been seen since.
That's not to say that there wasn't room for a surprising bit of practicality. Namely, this was the car crash scene, in which Stephen Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) hands were damaged beyond repair, and his life ripped apart.
The audience needed to feel the weight of the car crash, with director Scott Derrickson asking for it to be the greatest car crash in cinema history, and honestly, the team couldn't have done much better of a job. The crew used eight Lamborghinis and shot the scene on two continents, according to Executive Producer Stephen Broussard in a film featurette, a huge amount of work that was totally worth it.
They even had Benedict Cumberbatch in a rolling carcass of the car, with water rising around him. With what Doctor Strange achieved in computer imagery, there's no doubt the whole thing could have been done with CGI, but you can imagine it would have lacked the visceral, gut-punch impact that was needed from a crucial turning point in the story.
