One Mind Blowing Secret From Every MCU Movie
23. Giving The Fans What They Wanted - Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2
When James Gunn makes a comic book movie, there is a weird mix of certain things being as close to the comics as possible and others being drastically changed. Typically, this will work out for the best.
The man himself said on the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 audio commentary that fans of the comics were largely okay with many of the changes he made to the characters, from appearances to personalities. Drax, Rocket, and Groot (Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel) are all very different from the source material, but there were few complaints from anyone.
However, the comic book fandom is notoriously difficult to please when it comes to accuracy from the source material, and there was one thing in particular that was picked up on in the first Guardians film. Though people were largely okay with the bigger changes, there was uproar about Yondu's (Michael Rooker) fin.
It was scaled down to look like little more than a mohawk rather than the glorious accessory it is in the comics, and Gunn admitted on the director's commentary that he felt the flak from that. This is the specific reason why Yondu's fin got changed in the sequel, as the director simply threw a bone to the fans of his movie. It's not quite a "release the Snyder cut" movement, but the people's voice was heard.
