Patrick Stewart gets writer to pen Shakespeare for free!

patrick_stewart.jpgI always thought that Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard could convince any of his crewmembers aboard the Enterprise to do anything for him. It seems his role in Trek, may have rubbed off on himself! According to Coming Soon, he has convinced his Star Trek: Nemesis screenwriter John Logan to write him a script adaptation of The Merchant of Venice for free! The idea came out of an argument the two had after Logan described it as a "loathsome play".
"I spent half an hour arguing the contrary," says Patrick. "He said, Would you like it if I started working on a screen project for nothing?' He earns about $2 million a project, so I thought it was a decent offer. "It is a startling way of doing the play; it is about money and sex and love and corruption."
The adaptation will be set in Las Vegas in the 20th Century. We've seen so many adaptations of Shakespeare (not least this play which was adapted as recent as 2004 with Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons), so a project that tries to do something a little different gets a thumbs up from me. Now all he has to do is convince a studio to finance the movie and a director to helm it. source - the argus, trekweb
