Predicting The 10 Biggest Box Office Bombs Of 2018

4. Alpha

Alpha Kodi Smit McPhee
Sony

Budget: $50 million (estimated)

Predicted Box Office: $40 million (projected $60 loss)

Though Alpha is far cheaper than most of the movies on this list, it's still a costly affair when you consider how low the audience ceiling is on a project like this, which isn't rooted in an existing property, stars an actor who has zero box office impact (Kodi Smit-McPhee), is helmed by a filmmaker with unremarkable box office plaudits (The Book of Eli and Broken City's Albert Hughes), and is being released at the tail-end of the summer where studios typically dump their dud movies.

That's without even mentioning that the film has been delayed extensively, possibly due to Sony trying to whip the film into shape in post-production. It's just hard to see who this film is being made for, and the fact it even got a greenlight with the expectation of profitability is absurd.
