5. The Revenant
RottenTomatoes Score: 82% (8.0) Box Office: The Leonardo DiCaprio-led thriller has performed well on limited release so far, though the true test will be when the movie opens wide in the coming days. Considering its budget leaped from an initial $60 million to an astronomical $135 million, a merely solid performance will not satisfy: Oscar buzz will need to propel it into the stratosphere, but with the movie's challenging style, there simply may not be the market for that kind of movie. Verdict: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's brutal, bleak masterpiece just might be the movie to not only win Leonardo DiCaprio his much-sought Best Actor Oscar, but also frequent lenser Emmanuel Lubezki an unprecedented third consecutive Oscar win for his mind-blowing cinematography. It may be too slow and spuriously metaphorical for some tastes, but the harsh violence, visual poetry and committed performances combine to make it a film like no other. The sheer number of times you'll probably think to yourself, "How did they do that?" while watching is justification for the ticket price alone.
