Rogue One had absolutely no right to work. It was yet another Star Wars film with behind-the-scenes issues and a director who was all but replaced in the last stages of post-production, surrendering his vision of the film for something more studio approved, and it shoe-horned in Darth Vader for the sake of some fan-bait.

But, amazingly, that uneven formula conspired to make a stunning film that some Star Wars fans were willing to call the best ever without any hint of irony. And this was a film expanding a tiny story detail that we already supposedly knew, with characters we knew couldn't possibly survive and a pre-determined destination.

The power of the film comes down to the cast and the chemistry they build between their characters: with that in place, every death lands a terrible blow and the mythology of the fallen heroes really sings.
