7. Taken
Here's the one that started it all, the 2008 sleeper hit which came out of nowhere and reinvented Neeson as a bonafide, middle-aged action hero. As a former CIA operative with "a very particular set of skills", Mills pulls out all the stops to track down his kidnapped daughter Kim before she's sold off into sex slavery. After a lengthy build up, Taken dishes out fantastically brutal, satisfying action as Neeson punches countless anonymous goons in the face, kills a ton of people and risks life and limb in pursuit of his precious Kim. It's stylishly filmed and well acted for the most part, and though it's patently ridiculous, that's really just part of the fun. From the moment Neeson delivers that wonderful "set of skills" phone call monologue, his career was changed forever. Taken made $226.8 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, kick-starting a franchise that could never live up to the absurd entertainment value of the original.
