Ranking March 2019's Movies From Worst To Best
15. Under The Silver Lake
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 51% (5.62/10)
Box Office: With its release delayed numerous times following its disastrous Cannes premiere last summer, the new thriller from David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) was always going to struggle.
Having opened in just a handful of countries worldwide, Under the Silver Lake hasn't even cracked $2 million worldwide, with most of that figure coming from France during its release there last year.
The film doesn't release in the U.S. until mid-April, but given the heavily polarising reviews, even the backing of indie distributor A24 probably won't be able to help it much. It might win an audience of cult followers one day, but for now, it's a wash.
Verdict: Ambitious and pretentious in almost equal measure, this wildly overlong neo-noir boasts spritely visuals and a solid Andrew Garfield performance, but like its protagonist it too often loses itself down inconsequential rabbit holes that lack sufficient pay-offs.
Probably worth a watch if you're a fan of David Lynch or Paul Thomas Anderson, but the end result mostly feels like a karaoke cover of their styles rather than an affectionate tribute.
