Ranking October 2016's Movies - From Worst To Best
6. The Queen Of Katwe
RottenTomatoes Score: 93% (7.3/10)
Box Office: The Lupita Nyong'o-starring drama has made back just over half its $15 million budget, but is the sort of small, intimate studio drama that will do much better business at home at the beginning of next year.
Verdict: An unexpectedly entertaining underdog movie about...chess? Believe it. Madina Nalwanga, Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo give magnificent performances in this feel-good sports flick that surprisingly avoids the melodramatic, manipulative trappings more skeptical audiences will probably expect from live-action Disney dramas.
Wringing an impressive amount of suspense out of chess matches and boasting a strong sense of time and place (aided by shooting on location in Uganda), expect this one to be heinously snubbed by the Academy despite its many terrific qualities.
