Robocop: 10 Object Lessons In Making A Reboot

1. Have Some Fun

Beyond all of these thoughts of balancing old vs new, keeping fans and studios happy and trying not to upset anyone, the key part is to make a good film that people enjoy. It has to be entertaining and interesting or it simply isn't worth seeing. If a film feels too laboured or too polished it becomes soulless. Having a potential informant labelled as "Totally Stoned" may have irked some but it showed that the film makers still had a sense of humour. This film may not be the best film ever made and it's unlikely to be in the running for Oscars, but as a piece of interesting, fun, enjoyable Sci-Fi it is hard to fault. There are bad cops, good lines, a competent cast and enough story to keep the audience engaged. It's not the same as the original but retains enough of its DNA to stand proudly in the same family tree. The original Robocop will always be the best and this new film doesn't change that, but it is a much better and more thoughtful film than it is given credit for in most reviews. Will it stand the test of time? Will it stand up to future viewings as well as Paul Verhoeven's film? Only time and future viewings will tell, but one thing is for sure, it delivers an entertaining cinema experience. At the very least, go make up your own mind rather than listen to people who just don't get the concept. Thank you for your cooperation, goodnight.
