Spider-Man Homecoming: 5 Scenes We Need (And 5 We Don't)

1. Don't Need: The Same Old Love Interest

Mary Jane Watson
Sony Pictures

Both previous Spidey incarnations have featured an appearance from Gwen Stacy, and both almost featured a prominent role for Mary-Jane Watson. While MJ, played by Shailene Woodley, was chopped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the intent was still there and it's disappointing to see the production team recycle the same characters when they have a rich roster to dive into.

The problem with using the same love interest across multiple franchises is that they pose the same problems to our hero. If Homecoming brought us either Mary-Jane or Gwen Stacy, we're just going to see the same dynamics, problems and relationships played out on-screen, and that's boring. Why not freshen the movie and leverage the power of the Marvel universe to bring Peter a love interest that challenges him in a unique, exciting way?

So, Homecoming should pull something new out of the bag. Just look at the amount of women Peter has had in his life over the years; Cindy Moon, Elizabeth Allan and Felicia Hardy, to name a few. The smart money is on Captain Marvel herself, Carol Danvers, who has been romantically linked with Peter on several occasions. Captain Marvel is getting her own movie in 2018, and introducing her in Homecoming would be a great way for audiences to familiarize themselves with a lesser-known character.

In short, a new love interest would bring us a new Spidey relationship that we've never seen on-screen before. A woman like Carol Danvers, who is even more powerful than Spider-Man, would be a wonderful breath of fresh air. In a genre where the hero is always saving the woman, flipping this dynamic on its head would be a sweet, sweet role-reversal.
