After Return of the Jedi wrapped up the original Star Wars trilogy, viewers still had many questions. Was the Empire truly gone? Was Boba Fett actually dead?

But the question that fans pondered the most was - Why does Luke Skywalker using a green-bladed lightsaber instead of a blue one? This revision seemed all the more baffling since the 1982 teaser trailer and official posters depict Luke with a blue lightsaber.

This clip suggests that George Lucas and the director, Ross Marquand, intended to maintain the same type of lightsaber but changed their minds at the last minute. Considering the animators would've had to redraw every frame where Luke's lightsaber was lit from blue to green, there must've be a good reason why this decision was made.

And the simple answer is - contrast. While editing the scenes where Luke battles Jabba's forces above the Sarlaac pit, the animators noticed our hero's lightsaber's blade didn't stand out onscreen since many of the shots were in front of a bright, blue sky. As a result, Luke's blue lightsaber was changed to green to make it more visible.
