6. Starkiller Base's Destruction Means Nothing

"Hope" is the one thing mentioned over and over (and over) that the Resistance are trying to bring to the galaxy. We've heard that word for 30+ years, but in the new story, that word is inextricably tied to Luke Skywalker.

It's said that with him - an icon of the former rebellion, returning to lead the Resistance - the rest of the planets' populace would finally sit up and take notice. However... the wider ramifications of this message don't make sense.

We know that Starkiller Base fired its multi-cannon to decimate the Republic (literally billions of people all at once), yet you're telling me that news of its destruction - by another band of plucky rebels, no less - doesn't do ANYTHING in the way of motivation or counter-momentum?

Retroactively - and this can be applied to the Rebel's victory over the Imperials in Episode VI, or any forward movement whatsoever - Starkiller's destruction didn't do squat for intergalactic morale. The opening line of The Last Jedi's crawl is "The First Order reigns", so what was even the point of that film - and its position in the new trilogy - if the biggest thematic moment meant diddly squat?
