The Last Jedi positioned Snoke as one of the most powerful beings in the Star Wars universe before abruptly hitting the audience with the curveball that was his death. When Kylo Ren caught his former master off guard, all of the mystery and fan theories the character has inspired died an abrupt death.

Snoke's demise was easily one of the most shocking moments in the movie, but should Ren's betrayal have gone undetected by the big bad? The Supreme Leader appeared to have quite the stranglehold on his apprentice and bragged more than once about his ability to read and manipulate his mind.

Up until this point, Snoke is one step ahead of everyone, anticipating their every move, so it seems out of character for him to underestimate Kylo and let his guard down. This may have been a twist the fans didn't see coming, but it seemed to fly in the face of everything that was previously established about Snoke.

One possible explanation is that Snoke had grown overconfident by this point and took Kylo's servitude for granted, allow his apprentice to exploit his hubris. Still, it's fair to point out that a being with such skills in the Force should have been able to detect somebody using it to fatally wound him from mere feet away.
