While the original plan was to have a different director for each instalment of the new trilogy, Colin Trevorrow's firing means that J.J. Abrams' movies will bring the trilogy he started to a close.

Abrams is so often a creator of things, but rarely gets the chance to finish them, instead launching and then departing projects for someone else to pick up, leaving behind a bunch of his beloved mystery boxes in the process.

On this occasion, though, the mystery box approach to storytelling won't really work. Abrams isn't starting something, but finishing it - he needs to give answers and bring closure to not just this trilogy, but the whole saga. He's an excellent director, but is that something he's capable of?
