3. Maxwell Smart - Get Smart
Lesson of the day: Steve Carell should avoid adaptations of classic TV shows. Another comedy film filled with tired gags, Get Smart is a bad Hollywood adaptation with a mediocre director and typically lazy screenwriters who misunderstand the way adaptations should work. Carell doesn't bring the hilarity that he is usually known for - perhaps because of the poor script - and he is surrounded by a supporting cast that somehow got roles they really shouldn't have. It's kind of amazing to me that Carell was doing wonderful work on The Office, and at the same time making crappy movies. It could well be down to the freer interpretation that owning a character like Michael Scott offers, or having far stronger writers who have to bring their A-Game all year, but Carell definitely seemed to work best in that environment. I still hate that he left the show, but if it means that he won't be films like this anymore, then I'm perfectly fine with his decision.
