Suicide Squad: 8 Things Everybody Missed In The Trailer
3. Deadshot's Mask
It's that classic Hollywood dilemma; you've got a big star to headline your a superhero movie, but the film by its very nature requires them to have their face covered for most of the runtime. What do you do? The creative solution is to find a visual getaround (Iron Man) or get an actor who gives more of a f*ck about comic authenticity than vanity (Deadpool), but more often than not you wind up with a masked hero going maskless after two minutes of action just 'cause (see: The Amazing Spider-Man and most of the MCU). Suicide Squad appears to be pulling this trick with Deadshot, having Will Smith wear the white hood for a few choice scenes before ditching it and showing off that he's Will Smith. Of course, as Floyd Lawton goes around maskless a fair bit anyway, instead opting to use a little eye scope, it's not as egregious as with Spider-Man (a character whose in-comics mask removal led to the near death of Aunt May and a literal deal with the devil). In fact, while vanity probably plays a part in it somewhat, to Suicide Squad's credit it is making an effort to have that mask at least stick around for a bit too - during the shot of El Diablo going all devil, you can clearly see Deadshot is holding it. Sure, he's not wearing it, but that he's not ditching it at the first available opportunity has to count for something, right?
