Terminator Genisys: 10 Reasons It Could Surprise Everyone
4. Oscar Winner J.K. Simmons
Coming off of an incredible run of winning nearly every supporting actor award in existence, J.K. Simmons is back at doing what he’s alway done best: character work.
Playing Detective O’Brien, we can infer from the trailers that he’s a human in the past who decides to believe Sarah Connor and help her stay alive. But his true function appears to be much greater than that - he is likely to act as an audience surrogate, someone who we can relate to.
To every other main character, robots wearing the skin of humans and acting as time-traveling assassins is perfectly normal, but to O’Brien, and us as a result, this stuff is freaking crazy and someone needs to say so. His presence will likely help ground the over-the-top science-fiction and no one does exasperated better than Simmons.
It’s entirely possible that he will be under-utilised, but there’s always exciting potential when there’s an acclaimed actor involved in a film as an integral role.
