The 2015 Alternative Movie Awards

Best Villain - Rick Carver

2015 featured the big screen returns of instantly-recognizable heroes like James Bond, Ethan Hunt, Dominic Torretto, The Avengers and even Han Solo, yet the award for best movie villain of 2015 goes to... a real estate broker. While this year provided a massively entertaining crop of blockbusters, each one was slightly lacking when it came to delivering villains that made a lasting impression. 99 Homes' Rick Carver on the other hand, is quite simply a nasty piece of work. There are very few people in the business capable of playing despicable bastards better than Michael Shannon, and the acclaimed character actor delivers one of the best performances of his career as the businessman who evicts unemployed single father Andrew Garfield from his home and takes him under his wing as a kind of twisted protege, forcing the desperate man to take advantage of others in a similarly precarious financial situation. An intense and terrifying character without ever resorting to over-the-top theatrics, Shannon makes you believe without hesitation that Carver is a guy that could ruin your life in an instant and not even give a sh*t about doing so.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
