In a year where action icons Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and Liam Neeson all had new movies released, the biggest bad-ass of 2015 was played by none other than Academy Award winner Charlize Theron. In fact, last year saw a large number of strong female characters in high-profile roles in everything from the concluding chapter of The Hunger Games franchise to Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation via Spy and Sicario. However, Imperator Furiosa could still kick all of their asses. Despite playing the title character, Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky arguably plays second fiddle to Theron's Furiosa, who gets to do most of the dramatic heavy lifting and boasts a stronger and more rounded character arc. It speaks volumes that in one of the year's best-reviewed movies, the character of Furiosa is often singled out for praise. The South African actress' portrayal of the shaven-headed, bionic-armed ass-kicker also instantly elevated Furiosa into the pantheon of great female action heroes, where she sits comfortably up there with the likes of Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
