The Single Biggest Mistake Every James Bond Film Has Made

20. You Only Live Twice: Bond Becoming Japanese

You Only Live Twice is pretty awesome in many ways and it's a very, very fun spy thriller, but it is also ageing very badly thanks to its glaring racism and cringe-worthy depictions of Japan.

There are plenty of groan-worthy stereotypes and lines. For example, the head of the Japanese secret service (Tetsuro Tamba) says that "In Japan, men come first, women come second" to which Bond responds "I might just retire here."

That being said, the very worst part is when Bond puts on loads of make-up to seem Japanese (as he's going undercover), as well as a wig and fake-eyebrows, and it's every bit as painful-to-watch as it sounds. To add insult to injury, the make-up disappears after a few scenes, so it was completely pointless.

Like with many early Bond films, this is a strong piece of escapism but there are quite a few dated things you have to let slide in order to fully enjoy it.
