Trailer: SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK

The trailer is live for SYNEDOCHE, NEW YORK, the much anticipated directorial debut from the crazy mind of Charlie Kaufman, the screenwriter behind the wacky movies BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. Now, already you should have a good idea of the kind of movie this is likely to before I show you the trailer. You are are already well adversed with Kaufman, you should already have an idea as to whether you like his movies or not. I've always been particularly indifferent.. loving the idea behind his movies but often then being frustrated by how they would tail off mid way into the second act. Here, I feel like I'm frustrated from the get go...

And it's not because I don't like the trailer, strangely I actually rather do. It's because I'm not quite sure what the hell it is I'm seeing. It reminds me a lot of MAGNOLIA, this is a movie that can't possibly be told by it's trailer, it is something you need to see and feel in it's entirety before you can gage a reaction.

The movie stars the never less than excellent Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a sick man fearing death, who creates a vision of New York "full size" in a theatre. Catherine Keener, Michelle Williams, Samantha Morton, Emily Mortimer and Hope Davis all support.

The movie is playing at the BFI Film Festival next month and should hopefully get a theatrical run in the U.K. no later than February. In the U.S, the movie begins a limited run on October 24th.
