Sometime a film spends so long in the oven that it's almost certainly a sign it wasn't meant to be, and that sure seems to be the case with Return to Silent Hill.

Filmmaker Christophe Gans spent an entire 20 years trying to get this adaptation of legendary survival horror video game Silent Hill 2 made, and even though Gans did a stellar job with 2006's original Silent Hill film, this production had red flags out the wazoo.

For one, early footage made it clear that Gans was working with a drum-tight budget for a project of this scope, ultimately getting less than half the money he had for the original.

And this was reflected in the costumes, the sets, the VFX, heck even the wigs, all of which were lambasted by fans pre-release.

But when Return to Silent Hill finally came out, the bigger surprise was that Gans made something so resoundingly dull, while also taking so many unnecessarily fanbase-alienating detours from the source material.

We all wanted this one to be good, but the writing was on the wall long before it came out.
